AC Trustees and management are committed to the welfare of all beneficiaries and their protection from abuse and exploitation. We are continuously creating and maintaining an organisational environment that is free of harassment, abuse and exploitation, and to ensuring the same in all our work, through partners, with communities overseas. We know that the children and vulnerable adults in the communities with whom we work can be at risk.
A) Adherence to safeguarding policies
As a small charity with a focus on fundraising for our overseas partners, AC does not usually place long term staff / volunteers / contractors within projects or communities but as we grow, we believe it is important that everyone understands and adhere to safeguarding policies. For those who visit or work with communities, on our behalf we ensure that they are aware of our safeguarding policies and commit to work within our specific protection policies.
At Asecondchance level, some of the measures taken to ensure adherence are:
· ensuring, through awareness and personal and professional conduct, that staff and others minimise the risk to children and vulnerable adults.
· ensuring that the procedure for reporting safeguarding incidences are clear for our UK office and our partner country specific policies.
· Trustees are committed to reviewing of the safeguarding policies to ensure any emerging issues are incorporated from time to time.
Recognising that most of projects we fund are implemented by partner organisations, we have the following measures in place to minimise or prevent: physical abuse; emotional abuse; neglect; sexual abuse; financial and material abuse, and; discriminatory abuse.
1. All staff recruited by our partners undergo criminal check (In Kenya, they are issued with certificate of good conduct every three years)
2. All staff subscribe to child production policies by appending their signature and keeping a copy for themselves before recruitment.
3. Before confirmation of members of staff, references are sought confidentially from their previous employers
4. Staff are reshuffled to ensure beneficiaries are not handled by only one staff.
B) Any reported concerns
AC has not received any safeguarding concerns so far.
At field level with our partners, no incidents have been reported. If such occurs, the trustees of our partner organisations would be aware given that they are from the same communities.
